Understand which part of GUMSHOE uses recycled chewing gum and what a material claim can actually tell you.

Start with the sole

The documented GUMSHOE feature is its sole made with Gum-tec, a material developed using waste chewing gum. The shoe has other components too: its upper, lining, laces, stitching and assembled structure. Calling the entire sneaker “100% chewing gum” would erase those distinctions.

Gumdrop describes GUM-TEC® as a family of compounds for rubber and plastic applications. A family of compounds is not a single universal formula. The composition of a cup, a collection bin and a shoe outsole need not be identical.

Three separate questions

QuestionWhat answers it
Where is recycled material used? The specified component: the GUMSHOE sole.
How much recycled material is in that component?A dated, product-specific composition statement.
Can the finished shoe be recycled where I live?An actual collection route that accepts the finished product.

What we can show

The product photographs show the outsole pattern and the shoe’s assembled design. The original project page and Gumdrop’s collaboration account connect GUMSHOE to recycled gum. These sources support the material story, but they are not a current laboratory test, a life-cycle assessment or a guarantee of local recyclability.

A reused input can be a useful design choice without proving that every impact of a finished product is lower. A full comparison would need a defined product, materials, manufacturing, use and end-of-life assumptions.

A practical reading example

Suppose a product description says “recycled material in the outsole”. Record “outsole” as the component and “recycled input” as the claim. If no percentage, measurement basis or document is supplied, leave those fields unanswered. Do not replace an unanswered field with a number from an unrelated product.

Use the claim-reading worksheet to keep those questions separate.

One shoe. Different components.
One shoe. Different components.
  1. UPPER: The photographed upper is a separate component.
  2. SOLE: The documented Gum-tec material application.
  3. ASSEMBLY: Laces, lining and stitching complete the shoe.
  4. THE CLAIM: A sole claim is not a whole-shoe percentage.
