1 / Identify the waste stream

The 2018 GUMSHOE project described used gum collected from Amsterdam’s streets. In the wider Gumdrop system, dedicated collection bins and manufacturing waste provide additional streams. Keep each source identified: an input story is strongest when it can be tied to a particular product.

2 / Turn an input into a usable compound

Gumdrop explains that waste gum is recycled into GUM-TEC® compounds. Its brochure describes uses in existing manufacturing processes, including injection and blow moulding for suitable plastic products. That does not mean every listed process or recipe applies to the GUMSHOE outsole.

The useful question is what material leaves this stage, who specifies it and which properties are needed for its intended application. Temperatures, blend ratios and factory conditions are not supplied by the recovered shoe website, so no numerical manufacturing recipe is presented here.

3 / Give the sole a design

The project translates its city reference into a moulded Amsterdam map pattern. The shape, tread graphic and colour make the component recognisable. Look at the underside view and compare it with the side profile: the material and visual design have to work as one part of an assembled shoe.

4 / Make and describe the whole product

Upper, sole, laces and construction form the pair you wear. A responsible description should keep the recycled component distinct from the full shoe and provide model-specific sizing, care and condition information.
