Change the denominator and the percentage changes A component percentage cannot be silently promoted to a whole-shoe percentage. This invented mass example explains the arithmetic. Its 30 g, 100 g and 400 g values are not a GUMSHOE bill of materials, laboratory measurement or claim about current stock. 1. Copy the exact wording and identify its subject: input material, outsole, one shoe or a pair. Record whether the basis is mass or another measure. If the basis is absent, leave the calculation unresolved. 2. Use the same physical boundary for numerator and denominator. Recycled material in an outsole divided by the outsole mass answers a different question from that material divided by the whole shoe mass. 3. Check whether the cited material quantity is entirely recycled content or a compound containing other ingredients. A compound’s mass is not automatically the mass of recycled chewing gum. 4. Keep source, model, batch and method with a real claim. Do not average conflicting dated accounts or infer recyclability and environmental benefit from a recycled-content fraction alone. Invented component: Outsole mass 100 g, of which 30 g is the defined recycled input: 30/100 × 100 = 30% by mass of this outsole. Invented whole shoe: Whole shoe mass 400 g, with the same 30 g input: 30/400 × 100 = 7.5% by mass of this shoe. Boundary trap: The 30% component figure is not 30% of a 400 g shoe. That latter statement would imply 120 g, which the example does not contain. Missing compound composition: If the 30 g is only a Gum-tec compound mass and its recycled share is unknown, neither 30% nor 7.5% establishes the recycled-gum fraction. Claim record: Exact claim __; component __; numerator __; denominator __; mass/method __; compound composition __; model/batch/source __; unresolved field __. This exercise resolves a denominator question; it does not replace the product-specific specification needed for an actual percentage. Gumdrop — GUM-TEC material — https://gumdropltd.com/gumtec/
